I currently have a situation were I need to install SQL Server Express 2008 on a server that already has SQL Server 2005 installed on it. Please can you advise if this is recommended and what are the best practices for such an install.

Hi,

You can do side by side install SQL Server 2008 and 2005. No consequence of installing both. It really depends on what you want.
for more information please review the following:

there can be only one default instance per server, you'll have to install a named instance, other limitations are edition wise.

There is no issue of running SQL Server 2005 side by side with 2008. I use 2005, 2008 and R2 on the same box in my laptop. Is this a prduction server? Then you have to consider the resource allocation as there can be perfomance issues you will run into.

Thanks for all your comments. I've successfully installed the SQL 2008 on the server.
