We use solarwinds Orion and it's quite handy. Can be tailor fitted for wireless monitoring.
Free alternatives include Nagios and OpenNMS.

for the pure PING UP/DOWN we#re using ServersAlive by Woodstone.

This does checks on a timed base (every x Minutes).

For traffic-monitoring we're using MRTG (on a linux machine).

Are timed checks OK to you, or do you need a "real time" monitoring solution?

What is unstable about the Dude monitor?  We use it exclusively for our network monitoring and management and don;t have any problem with it.  Are you using the latest version?  Make sure that you have a known stable version and not a beta!

Cheers,  Mike.
