Automate tasks for Wide Area Network Computers

I am looking for suggestions for automating tasks among computers in a wide area network.

Ideally, the workstations will check in themselves and recognize that a new command needs to be launched and launch it. Then (preferably) report success or failure.

Something like PDQDeploy works well, but only if all the computers are connected and running at that time. I'm looking for something similar to Logmein's system which launches applications/scripts on remote systems, but without the monthly licensing costs.

Any suggestions?
