How to setup VPN with iPad and Linksys WRT54G router?

Hello, I have a Linksys WRT54G router (ver.5?) with Firmware 8.00.7. I would like to setup a VPN connection with my iPad 4.3.2. Is this possible and how?

It is Possible, but it's not easy.  You first need a router that supports VPN which the wrt54G wih base firmware does not.
DD-WRT has VPN host built in and should work well for your needs
https://172.17.0.22/recoveryconsole/help/overview.html
Follow the Instructions on their site extremely closely as you can brick your router if you don't.
Once complete you will have the VPN back end setup.  Now your problem will be connection from the iPad.  If this is a hope connection which I would imagine it is you will not have a static IP which means it will change on you and is a problem.  You can do 2 things.  you can purchase a static IP with your internet and use this for the connection, or you can register a domain and setup a dynamic dns and just use the dns name.

Seems like the link you posted is an internal IP? Can't access the site.
But is DD-WRT the only way to go?

www.dd-wrt.com

DOH I was working on backups when I was answering...

It's not the only way, but I feel it is the easiest way.  You will need some sort of VPN server to do what you are wanting.  You can add a VPN software or you can use ddwrt which has it built in.

If you are just looking for options to connect to a PC at home you could look at WYSE Cloud Conneciton for the iPad and your PC's or even TeamViewer.

So just to clarify- easiest way is to install dd-wrt which has built in VPN software but i would still need a VPN server running as well?

DD-wrt has a VPN server built into the firmware which you install on the Linksys router.  Their website has a complete walkthrough on installation and configuration.

If you went another way you would be looking at setting up an acual VPN software server solution behind our firewall which I imagine is your linksys and then pass the traffic through.
