My pentium 4 running windows vista is unable to boot.  When I power it up
the microsoft progress bar shows on the screen and it just keeps running.  It
will not boot.  I tried to do a system restore but it would not work.  It just kept
running and said that it was eliminating temp files and then restoring the registry
but would not go beyond that point.  Do you think it is corruption of windows Vista
or might it be a failing hard drive?

I did the windows repair but it said that it could not repair the sytem.

Have you try the chkdsk /f utility starting with vista dvd, chose repair your system, use console and type the command I enter before.

Try to press F8 key before windows logo appear and chosse start in safe mode.

Could you start your computer in safe mode?

I recommendd to make a backup of your important information starting with your vista install dvd and chose repair. Then enter the console and in command line try to make a backup or copy to a usb hard drive. Another option is to boot with a bootable CD like UBCD Maybe you have to add storage or sata controller to it.

    Accepted Solution

I had to reinstall Windows.  Windows was corrupted.  With the reinstall,
after a backup of data, everything was back to normal.
