Generally thin clients have an embedded OS installed, but the license for that is handled by the manufacturer of the thin client, so you don't have to worry about anything from that side. If on the other hand you build your &quot;Thin Clients&quot; yourself you will of course have to make sure the OS you install is licensed properly. In such a situation I would suggest using some Linux variant as that uses an OpenSource License, or maybe something FreeBSD based. Please can someone confirm Thin Client licensing and cite a source, or reference material (source / reference required)? As I understand I need a Server CAL and TS CAL per device used. I do not need an OS License per device.

Thin Client Licensing

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, based on the Microsoft Vista codebase, is the last 32-bit server operating system released by Microsoft. It has a number of versions, including including Foundation, Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web, HPC Server, Itanium and Storage; new features included server core installation and Hyper-V.

Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2003 was based on Windows XP and was released in four editions: Web, Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter. It also had derivative versions for clusters, storage and Microsoft’s Small Business Server. Important upgrades included integrating Internet Information Services (IIS), improvements to Active Directory (AD) and Group Policy (GP), and the migration to Automated System Recovery (ASR).
