3ware Controller 9500S-12, RAID5( 4 HDs)  poor perfomance copying large files

We run a RAID 5 with 4 HDs und net capacity of 1.2 TB on Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2. As controller we use a 3ware 9500S-12. Firmware version is FE9X. Windows Driver Version is
Unfortunately, copying large files is extremely slow and even break away. Read Operations are quit fast. Write cache is turned off, because the controller has no backup battery.
Are any already known causes responsible for this issue?
Or we need to do a firmware update?

    Write cache is vital for performance.  If you want more speed buy the battery.  It is that simple.
