Hi,

Is your backup solution programatically shutting them down in order to back them up?

Regards,

RobMobility.

Seems like Windows update is automatically trying to apply Service packs for SQL Server 2005. ( Hope you have SQL Server 2005).
Apply the SP4 manually for SQL Server 2005 or SP2 for SQL Server 2008 to fix the issue.

I know that windows update fails to install that service pack. I will download the service pack manually and try to install it.

Kindly let me know the Service pack information of your existing instance by running this query:

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')

>> I can restart them and they function perfectly

Kindly let me know whether it is your Database or your SQL Server service.
If it is database, then make sure that Auto-Close property is set to False for those particular databases.( Right click your Database name  -> Choose Properties -> Options -> Check Auto Close property)

Yes, this is what I asked you to check earlier.
And this would cause your services to shut down automatically.

Yes, then Windows Update should be the reason for that.
Applying Service pack manually should fix it.
