sql 2008 r2 install firewall warning

Was trying to install sql 2008 r2 on win 2008 r2, I got the following warning
---------------------------
Rule Check Result
---------------------------
Rule "Windows Firewall" generated a warning.

The Windows Firewall is enabled. Make sure the appropriate ports are open to enable remote access. See the rules documentation at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=94001 for information about ports to open for each feature.

OK

Do I need to disable firewall, or can I go ahead. How can i check if port 1433 is open?

I would go ahead with the install. This warning will pop up no matter if the port is open or not. I got the message and never did anything with the firewall and all has worked fine since day one. However I will post the directions for checking the port momentarily.

It's only a warning for you to notice that firewall is enabled and may block network traffic. In order to properly accept connections after installation you need to open port(s) on which SQL Server will listen (default is 1433).

netsh firewall set portopening protocol = TCP port = 1433 name = SQLPort mode = ENABLE scope = SUBNET profile = CURRENT

Run this script in cmd prompt and it will open the port.

I did not open the firewall, just went ahead with the install and there were no problems
