iPhone connecting to Exchange 2003 server but fails to download emails

I have inherited a SBS2003 machine and am setting up a couple of iPhones to get Exchange emails. (I have done this 100 times in the past on previous servers so am familiar with the procedures, required ports etc and have a third party SSL cert installed).
When setting up the account on the phone, it connects to the server fine and allows me to choose mail/contacts/calendar, which indicates that the account has definitely been set up correctly. When I go to the mail screen however, the phone takes a few seconds before giving the 'connection to the server failed' message.
Outlook web access works fine on the server, as does IMAP, but the customer wants full Exchange functionality and that is what we promised them also.

There is nothing untoward being reported in the Event log.
Is this something to do with the oma or activesync sites in IIS?

It could also be an issue with the firewall not allowing the connection.

Apologies for the delay in replying. The site you linked me to, MegaNuk3 - one of the first things it mentioned was making sure the Exchange server was upgraded to Service Pack 2. That's all it was in the end. I've spent so much time on this and still forgot the basics!

Yep. SP2 sure does help.
