What does "Adding" a mail box" mean on Exchange 2007

We tend to go to "properties" of a mail box and add SMTP email address  to users  X mail box, but I am not exactly sure what this does. Does this copy any email to user X mail box, or does this allow user x to login under their account?

If you add additional smtp addresses to an existing mailbox it just adds an additional address that is directed to that mailbox, it does not create an additional user or login.
