Blackberry - New Blackberry for existing BES user unable to sync old email

I am running Blackberry Enterprise 4.1.4, and I have a user on Verizon using a Blackberry Bold 9650 who is unable to get any old emails synced when he does an enterprise activation.  All contacts and all calendar items are synced NO PROBLEM.

I have added the registry keys to enable PRE-POPULATION of email messages for 15 days and restarted all Blackberry services, but still no joy.

Any help is appreciated.  Platform is Windows 2003 for the OS, Exchange 2003 SP2 for the email server.

The user could not be without these emails and (I'm serious) got a Droid phone over the weekend.

Yeah push email seems alot more flexible in some regards, I think the Blackberry defaults can be changed I think, possibly with the desktop software but it has been a while as we dropped BES a while back too.

I don't know anyone that ever used a Blackberry as a full email client to review emails from over a year ago, but that's what they were trying to do.  The Droid / Smartphone has an option to SYNC ALL, and while I wouldn't do it (I keep 2 months), they did and it took 2 hours to sync...but it did sync 2GB of email.
