asked on

Why does MS Word open 3 instances of itself when I click the icon on the desktop?

When I click MS Word on the desktop, 3 instances of itself open up (and they all open up slowly).  Then when I click File, Exit, for each one, they take about 30 seconds each to close.

I only want 1 instance of MS Word to start when I click the MS Word icon on the desktop.

Thanks for your help.

By default Word, will simply create another document in the existing instance, as you suppose. It is possible, e.g. by coding,  to create another instance. Assuming that the shortcut doesn't do that, and also assuming that there are, in fact, new instances (task manager should confirm that), then it might be worth trying these Word troubleshooting procedures from Microsoft.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a commercial document editing program that is part of the Microsoft Office suite. It features numerous text-editing tools for creating richly formatted documents, along with tools for the use of macros in Word documents. Word's native file formats are denoted either by a .doc or .docx file extension. Plugins permitting the Windows versions of Word to read and write formats it does not natively support, such as the OpenDocument format (ODF) are available. Word can import and display images in common bitmap formats such as JPG and GIF. It can also be used to create and display simple line-art.
