Exchange 2010 Database Backup Failing

We’re running Exchange 2010 SP1 (no roll-ups installed) under Windows Server 2008 R2 and trying to backup the Exchange volume using Windows Backup utility.  It was running fine for over a month and then I noticed event ID 565 (consistency check failed) and event ID 518 (pointing to missing log files).   The backup completes but gives a warning “The application will not be available for recovery from this backup.  The consistency check failed for the component …”.

Looking further at the information contained in event ID 518, indeed there are 2 log files missing.  How they went missing is anyone’s guess but the question is, how do I get a good backup so that my accumulating log files can be eliminated?

I dismounted the database, moved the log files to a different location and remounted the database.  Upon startup, new log and checkpoint files were created and a backup ran cleanly.  Thanks for the advice!!
