Why does Word 2003 take a long time to open and close, when Excel 2003 does not?

When I open Word 2003 from the desktop icon, it takes about 30 seconds before I can begin typing in a new document.  When I close Word 2003, it takes about 30 seconds for the program to close.

Yet, when I click on Excel 2003 from the desktop icon, it takes about 2 seconds to open, and 2 seconds to close.

Why does Word 2003 take so long and how can I speed things up?

Thank you.

It is most likely an add-in that was installed on your MS word program.  The easy way to do it is to disable the add-ins one at a time until it "works" the way you like it.  Then you can go back and enable the ones that did not cause the problem.

The official microsoft office troubleshooting guide is here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

However, I would first try the disable add-ins method before doing all the rest of the stuff listed in the MS official help.
