Joomla 1.5 How to implement custom style for vertical menu ?

I created a custom html module to place a static/non-joomla driven menu inside of it. I added the CSS to my template's css. When I publish it to the left though the menu inherits the module block style for the left position. In my custom html module I am applying the CSS to the div's and I do see some of the changes there but it's not displaying properly and is wrapped inside of the template's module block style. Any help is appreciated.

I have attached a screenshot showing you the image I want to overlay the menu on.
