USB hard drive I/O failures - Windows Server 2008 r1

I'm wondering if there are known issues with large USB hard drives with Windows Server 2008 r1.  In the last 6 months I have had a 2TB and a 3TB (with 2TB partition since Windows wouldn't accept larger) USB drive fail with hard I/O errors.  The 3TB drive was on a new PC, so it can't be the USB controller on the motherboard, and I'm pretty sure I replaced the USB cable.

I'm replacing tomorrow with an INTERNAL 2TB drive.

Is the USB drive connected via powered USB hub? Lack of power is often cause of these IO errors.

No, it's 3.5 with A/C adaptor.

I never found the reason.  I've copied over to an internal drive.  Closing question.
