STSADM backup size very large

Dan560 asked

I am migrating my SharePoint server to a hosted provider. They require me to backup my website and to then upload the backup file via FTP. I am using STSADM to complete this backup.

My problem is when I go Storage space allocation i've only used 8GB, but when I do the backup the size is 15GB.

Commands I am doing -

stsadm -o backup -url http://urlname -filename <filename>

Usually I would not be concerned about the size, but as I need to upload via my ADSL line I would rather it reflect the true size of my site.

Am I doing something wrong?
