Here are some steps.

also i would recommend using ajax to load the bulk content and have your regular page load normally. after 2 seconds call the ajax to grab the rest of the content.
You can put this at the top of the page:

<?php
   $mtime = microtime();
   $mtime = explode(" ",$mtime);
   $mtime = $mtime[1] + $mtime[0];
   $starttime = $mtime;
?>

Open in new window

and this at the bottom:

<?php
       $mtime = microtime();
       $mtime = explode(" ",$mtime);
       $mtime = $mtime[1] + $mtime[0];
       $endtime = $mtime;
       $totaltime = number_format($endtime - $starttime,3);
?>

<div>
Page loading time: <?php echo"$totaltime seconds";?>
</div>

Open in new window

You may find the "page speed" plugin (requires Firebug) for Firefox useful.
It can give you various hints on how to improve load time of your existing pages.

Then again, it's sometimes more about foolin gthe user: Just a few days ago I changed a redirection page (i..e it consists mostly of a <meta http-equiv="reload" content="0; URL=..."/>) to have *more* content, namely a ake static version of the page redirected to. Even though the target site still sometimes needs 2 or 3 seconds to load, user's think it's immediately there - apparently noone has tried to interact with the forms or click a link before completion of the redirection so far :)
