Virus problem on a Mac

I'm working on a Mac computer that has become infected with various rouge AV trojans (MacProtector, for one). Sophos did a good job of cleaning up the computer, but it cant clean the backups created by Time Machine. I've tried to manually delete them, but I get an error saying Time Machine backups cant be modified. How do I get those infected backups cleaned?

I'd rather not delete the entire backup if possible. I've identified the infected files in the backup, and I'm looking for a way to take care of those individually. I do thank you for your suggestion...it may come to deleting the entire backup if there is no way to deal with the individual files.
From the link:  "Also, when using the Actions menu, with a file or folder selected, there is an option to delete all instances of the file/folder from all backups."

Although I've not tried it myself I read that as saying you could selectively delete files/folders from all your Time Machine backups...

Wait, I think I misread the article. I'll give it a try.
