If you are going to do a rename, it should actully be to abc.local so you don't have any namespace collisions with your public DNS. If your domain is, and you tried to access from your internal network you wouldn't be able to do it unless was running on your domain controllers.

unless your public domain has a www prefix then you can set a pointer in the dns  on the server so that www traffic goes outside.
