Hi Experts,

Hope you can help me out here. Im running ESXi 4.1 Enterprise. I have around 40 -50vms. I backup these VMs with vDR. Since I dont want to keep the local vDR backups on site I want it to be uploaded to the cloud backup.

Since my vDR VM is running during the night (out of business hours) and the Integrity Check/ Reclaiming  is done during the day im not able to shutdown the VM.

Question: Is there a way for me to copy the vDR VMDK (which holds the backup data) to an another location. from the other location I will setup my cloud backup as a source.

Many Thanks

Well. I want to have a schedule task to copy my vmdk every Saturday of a week and then from there the cloud backup will picit from there. hope it makes sense

I think you need convertor enterprise plug-in in vcenter server for scheduling
A crude but effective way would be to script taking a snapshot of the VMDK in question, copying the unlocked VMDK to the cloud and then commiting the snapshot back to the VMDK.

Doing this releases the lock on the main VMDK allowing you to copy it.

As I said - it's crude (and TBH, not very elegant either) but it's a free solution and it would work.

Is your vDR repository on a CIFs share of NFS mounted VMDK?

Unfortunately you will have to shutdown the vDR appliance, to be able to copy the contents of the repository.

You could use one of the following scripted solutions, but also make sure they theese scripts do not run when vDR backups are running.

(can be performed whilst the virtual machine is live or powered on)

2. ghettoVCBg2
