Veeam Backups to Disk - Then Tape

Hi

We have 3 VM guest serves that we would like to backup to disk (server share - not SAN).  We would also like to make sure the backups are taken to tape also.

We run daily full system backups to tape, what is the correct veeam backup setting(s) to chose to ensure we take a full backup of each guest VM?  We would then wan the backup to be overwritten on a daily basis to ensure we done consume to much space....

thanks

I would recommend Reverse Incrementals, which would use Change Block Tracking on the VM, and keep your backup size to a minimum on the Server Share, and backups to tape would be quicker.

That is correct.

If you want less space used.

Always test your backups, that's check you can recover from tape, and also check you can recover from Veeam Backup. Do not leave it, when you have a crisis!

Yes it does.

But I would still recommend you go through the entire recovery process.

1. Check you can restore your Veeam backups from tape.

2. Check you can restore and recover a nominated Virtual Machine.

How often you do the above depends on your DR policy within your organisation. Every month or quarter is not uncommon.

How about simly running a full backup (daily) and configure it to overwrite the day befores???
There will only ever be 1x file to use...

It depends on how much space you have on your tapes, your tape backup window, and what's suitable for you.

We always run full backups daily, but the backup cycle is longer, and you require more disk and tapes, but it's the fastest recovery cycle, although with Veaam, you have got Reverse Incrementals, so this leads to faster recovery, with less disk space requried.
