I am using a Dell 4310 and when I move the pointing stick it highlghts texts and I don't want it to.  I have to hit the Alt key to remove the selection.  Is there a setting somewhere that has a sensitivity range or something?

Are you pressing down on the pointing stick while you move it?  You shouldn't be.  Perhaps it's stuck in the down position?

Usually just pushing it in the direction I want the cursor to go.
Do you have the Dell touchpad driver installed?  My recollection is that the touchpad driver also has sensitivity and similar settings for the touchstick.  It may be that it's set so that if you tap it (from the top), it highlights, and if you tap it again (from the top), it stops highlighting.  (Easy enough to test).  If so, I guess you'd want to avoid tapping it from the top.

That was going to be my next move.  I will check to make sure driver is up to date and settings are set accordingly.

It was the driver.
