I have a windows 7 laptop that has a virus, I found the file that was the virus and deleted it.

When when ever I try to open any file, it opens up the "open with" dialog box, so I can't start any applications.  The only wayt to start an application is if I right click on the file and run as administrator, then it works, it runs the app.
When I open a word document or ap picture file, it works it opens the application up.
When I try to start word, or any application, that's when it doesn't work.
I tried to go to teh screensaver, and I get the following error:
"C:\windows\systm32\rundl32.exe"
"Application not found"

I'm stumped.

I'm running malwarebytes for malware, but it didn't find anything yet.

Run this exe file association fix

http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/exe_fix_w7.zip

After running this restart the computer and check....if the issue persists then create a new user account....restart the computer and login under the new account...check how it works.

It sounds like the registry was corrupted during virus removal. Please try making a new file on the desktop that is a .TXT file. After that, open the file and then insert this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithList]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.exe\OpenWithProgids]
"exefile"=hex(0):

Go to file -> save as, and save as a .reg file. Then, right click that file, and select merge.
Let me know if it works for you.

I tried your steps, just didn't try a new account, let me try that, but malwarebytes is still running, so I don't want to stop it now, I have to wait until that's done running.

Thanks guys for your assitance, not sure exactly which one did it as I performed both, and then malwarebytes also found 2 infections, which it disinfected, so after I reboot, it's working fine now.
