In a short: if the VM you are backing up has 10 copies of exactly the same word document, the backup only contains one copy of the file. the other 9 places just hold a pointer to the 1 file.

can you backup individual folders or file with VDR or it can backup just VMDK files?
VMDK represents the whole VM machine. correct??
 OR
VMDK represent hard disk?
Commented:
You can RESTORE individual files, but you can not BACKUP individual files
VMDK is the virtual hard disk
