What defines an email's age in Exchange 2010?  When a retention tag is set to remove deleted items older than 40 days, does this age counter reset if the email is moved  to deleted items, does it reset if a deleted item is accessed, or does this apply to the send date?

I haven't been able to find a clear answer on this.  Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

It appears from this technet thread that the modified date is updated when messages are moved, copied, etc.  There is a column you can view to check the modified date on your items.  Hope this helps.

Helped out tremendously!  I had items that weren't being removed using the retention policy.  These items were being archived using 3rd party, thus changing the modified date on the email.  Confirmed my suspicions.

Thanks again!
