asked on

event id 515 bad hard disk?

I get event id 515 Cannot query the Volume ID for \Device\Harddisk0\DR0. The data is the error.
Does this mean the hard disk is on its way out? I notice when I try and install sp1 on the windows pro laptop it gets about half way but never finishes to maybe faulty disk?

Run on the commandline "chkdsk /r "to check for bad blocks and repair if necessary

Can also be related to VSS services (snapshot/backup) which could also relate to an SP install setting a snapshot/recovery point.  On the other hand, SP1 creates a ton of HD activity so that is also a likely time for an HD failure to show.  Normaly an HD failure has other errors in the system log though.  Some of the new SSD HDs have been coming up with odd failure errors.  You should run Windows CHKDSK or even better hardware diags if your system has that option.  Next check your VSS service and try setting it to Auto temporarily if it isn't already there.
