Hi Guys

We have an IBM x3650 which is used as a backup server, it currently has an external LTO3 SCSI tape drive attached, but I'm looking to replace this with a LTO5 SAS Tape Drive.

The server has an external SAS port built into it, I'm not sure if this controlled by the same controller as the onboard RAID. My questions are

Is it safe for me to use this for the LTO5 Tape Drive? or will this cause problem with the RAID?

Is the onboard SAS quick enough for the LTO5 Tape Drive?

Thanks

It is generally not recommended to run your tape drive on a RAID controller.

You have a single controller that has the option to control external devices as well.  But a tape drive should be on it's own controller.

I was hoping over wise, but I think you're advise is spot on - I will get an external SAS controller.

Thanks
