asked on

dictionary file I can download

I've seen the online dictionaries.  Is there a dictionary file I can use in my program?  I don't need definitions - just a list of words.  I'm trying to write a newspaper "Jumble" game descrambler.  Trying to learn some more languages (java & perl currently).

This is a big list of downloadable dictionaries:
http://www.dicts.info/dictionaries.php

This is the description of free spell checker:
http://jortho.sourceforge.net/

It suggests to create dictionary from this wiktionary file (for English):

http://download.wikimedia.org/enwiktionary/latest/enwiktionary-latest-pages-articles.xml.bz2

you'll be able to find a list that suits your needs at the following:

I was not clear that I needed an English dictionary.   Some of the solutions also gave me a dictionary program when all I wanted was a text file that was a list of English words.

If you think the points should go elsewhere; give them - I'm not in this for the points.

I just wanted to close the question so nobody worked on something I think is solved.
