How Do I Install Adobe Reader for LInux

I am running Xubuntu 10.10 and I need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader on it. I went to Adobe's site and downloaded the file. I ran chmod +x on the downloaded file. I then ran the executable file and it said, "Extracting files, please wait." Then it said, "Enter installation directory for Adobe Reader 9.4.2" showing /opt as the default directory. However, when I press enter I get, "Error: Cannot write to directory /opt"

What is wrong here and how can I fix it?

Thanks in advance.

You need to put sudo in front of that executable file
sudo /path-to-AcrobatReader-install file.

Alternately, you can change the permissions on /opt so that you can write to it in user mode:
  sudo chmod a+rwx /opt
