problem reinstalling HP LaserJet 3390

Hi
We have a laserjet 3390 printer/copy/scanner - it recently stopped working on one PC - the rest on the network still work fine.
I downloaded the full software package (V4) from HP and tried to reinstall. I had several attempts and all failed. The current message I receive has the following text in the title of the windows

C:\setup\hpzpsc01.exe" -m lj3390 -cpe -l ENU -f C:\WINDOWS\hppins02.dat -Validate -No -w 8179662

and this in the message window.
"The system cannot find the file specified"

Can anyone help?

I'm installing an XP PRo pc and the printer is connected on the network.

Stop the Spooler service - start>run>cmd>net stop spooler
Delete the Printers from Printers and Faxes
Delete the Drivers - Printers and Faxes>File>Server Properties>Drivers Tab, and delete them all
Restart the Spooler - start>run>cmd>net start spooler

Now, once the printers ANd drivers are deleted, try just going to start>run>"\\PrintServer", and double click, to see if it pushes down the correct driver. Shouldnt need the full driver pack.....
Here's an article written to help you solve printer problems that talks about the same things that John mentions:

Can you open the folder C:\setup\ and look for a folder called "util". Often HP software comes with a level1 "L1" through level4 "L4" cleanup procedure, you run each one and reboot between running them. I would like to give this a try to clean up any old files that may be present.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestions - i do need the full software - as it is also used as a scanner.
I'll have just found the util folder and will try it - there is a scrubber.exe and uninstall.bat and  uninstall_L1.bat to uninstall_l4.bat
any suggestion as to what order i run things?

Hi - I ran all of the bat files in the util folder in sequence and reran the install - it still fails but I now get a window popping up with the title "Error Situation Code: 17691175" and within the window:
"The following lines were retrieved from the installation error logs:
  Now Launching=X:|hpzpsc01.exe -m lj3390 -cpe "/rerun" "1" -l XXX -f X:DIVins??.DAT Exit code=2"

That is most interesting... Can you double check there is no HP installation folders in the following locations:
C:\program files\
C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\ (look in x86 or x64 depending on your OS type for old drivers)
C:\documents and settings\your username\local settings\application data
C:\program files\common files\
also go to start -> run -> "%temp%" and empty this folder.

Download this : http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html
install it, then open start menu -> all programs -> windows uninstaller cleanup utility.
From the list it generates, only select software that specifically involves HP printing products (Hp solution center, HP AiO, etc.

Retry installation, let me know what happens.

Hi Walrus Soup
Many thanks for your help  - i ran through as suggested and removed everything.
the install still fails with a window saying in the title bar:
"C:\hp3390\setup\hpzpsc01.exe" -m lj3390 -cpe -l ENU -f C:\WINDOWS\hppins02.dat -Validate No -w 5244032

and then in the windows itself it just says
The system cannot find the file specified

Any further thoughts? i appreciate it :)
Lets try running this next:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software4/COL9076/oj-24444-2/AccessDeniedUtility_1_3_4.exe

I would also like you to go into C:\Windows\System32\DRVSTORE\ , move all the HP folders in there to a backup location and then remove them.

After these, try the installation again.

Hi Walrus Soup

i ran through those steps and got (almost) the same result - the six digit number at the end of the message is different - otherwise identical.

the install still fails with a window saying in the title bar:
"C:\hp3390\setup\hpzpsc01.exe" -m lj3390 -cpe -l ENU -f C:\WINDOWS\hppins02.dat -Validate No -w 58996

Thanks again

i've read elsewhere that previous versions of the software may not have the problem - the current download from HP is V4.0 -  any idea where i can get an earlier version?

Thanks

Hi Walrus Soup
Thanks again for you assistance - unfortunately I ran out of time - the fix was taking too long and the client was starting to get annoyed :( so I decided to wipe the system and reinstall Windows - after which the software installed first time!
I'm awarding you the points and your help was much appreciated and I felt you would have got there.

Thanks again
Thank you. I understand how it can be, be sure to save what we have tried and maybe if you stumble upon another one we can finally nail a solid method to get those types of problems taken care of.

I'm confident that Walrus Soup was taking me in the right direct - i just ran out of time and and had to take the "quick" route of rebuilding the system.
