Will Server 2008 standard product key work with R2?

Hi,

We have been evaluating Server 2088 Standard R2 and is now time to purchase the license. Can we purchase a Standard 2008 copy or does it have to be R2? I assume in either case we just type in the key and it will activate the full version?

Windows Server 2008 (sometimes abbreviated as "Win2K8"[2]) is one of Microsoft Windows' server line of operating systems. Released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008, and officially released on February 27, 2008, it is the successor to Windows Server 2003, released nearly five years earlier. A second release, named Windows Server 2008 R2, was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009.

If you are under Software Assurance with Microsoft for your existing server 2008 system, you should have access to a new server 2008 R2 key. but spaperov is correct, you cannot use a 2008 rtm key on a 2008 R2 server.
