MDT2010 Windows 7 image - re-capture

I've created a refernce machine then captured an image and then pushed image out using WDS to a few test machines.

All this is fine - I've found I need to inject some print drivers and disable some options so I've ammended the image using WSIM and added things in MDT2010 under drivers and software.

HOWEVER - I chose to have AV installed after the machine comes onto the network once the user logs on.  This takes too long and isn't bets practise.

I know need to re-capture using sysprep (?) to install AV manually and then save teh .wim file so mcafee agent is on the default image.

Now i'm at the end of the process I can't work out how to go back and re-image or make an ammendment to my custom .wim?!

Do i need a new task sequence or use the old capture task sequence?

Or do I just boot into my latest image and run the .vbs scrit and overwrite the .wim?

Cheers

The reccomended way to install AV application is to create the reference machine, install AV and recapture your WIM. Since all your drivers and options are in place within MDT, all those things will be available in the WIM file as well. Offline application installation is not possible using DISM.

Thanks for the quick response.

Basically i have a almost perfect .wim image now that just needs AV installed on it.

I don't want to start a new reference image again as i've done quite a bit of work online with the image i.e installing adobe and flash etc

It's the "re-capturing" process I have confusion with (the "initial/first" capture process I did and understood fine).  I have only 1 almost finished image that i'm working with and it's installed on 3 machines in my lab.  Do I literally just logonto those machiens as admin and run the capture .vbs script again and save/overwrite the .wim file on my deployment share?

Thanks
Ian
Hi Ian,

Are you doing manual steps during the WIM image process? Or everything is automated? If you deploy your existing WIM image, install AV applications and recapture using capture Task sequence, you "may not" get required results. Again, how are you deploying this WIm image to your Lab machines? Using ImageX or MDT? (What is "capture.vbs"?)

Even though it may be a time consuming exercise, I recommend you to create a reference machine and capture the image again. If you have all the processes (such as application installation, etc) integrated into MDT workbench, the process will be too easy and repeatable. After-all, MDT is designed for the repeatable process.

Thanks Jibu,

Ok i'm using MDT2010 SP1 for lite touch deployment.

I cretaed 3 task sequences:
Create a reference image
Capture a reference image
Deploy captured image

Then used WDS to boot lite touch boot image and then MDT2010 to multicast to multiple machines at once - all works great.

I've added drivers and changed settings using WISM over the weeks and have been to scared to touch my single sacred image in an online fashion.

My images has about 2hrs work on it i.e changed libraries look, few reg hacks, downloded adbobe, silverlight, flash, codecs, installed few custom apps etc.

I have office 2007 applied via applications on MDT2010 so that's not an issue.

The script is \\server\share\....cscript litetouch.wsf or you call the .vbs version and i'm sure that starts the sysprep/capture process from the desktop?  Been a while since I did this though!

Basically I want to boot my 'perfected' image onto a test machine and install AV then recapture the image then push out to more and more PC's once happy!

Cheers
Ian
