3TB WD external hard drive -GPT or MBR? Symantec Backup Exec GRT fails on one type of hard drive.

I am running Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R2 SP1 and am getting a job failed with exception 'failed to mount one or more virtual disk images' when trying to run a GRT application and file level backup of a hyper-V server. Both host and guest are running 2008 R2 SP1.

I only get this error on one particular type of usb external drive - WD 3TB Drives- my 1TB and smaller drives work perfectly.

I have been informed by Symantec that they do not support hyper-V GRT level backups to a GPT disk.
My confusion is that when initially inspecting the disk in disk management, even though it had a 3TB partition, it showed as MBR -   but I am aware that the maximum size for an MBR partition is 2TB.
I deleted volumes and converted to GPT (tested job, still failed) and back to MBR, and now it gives me two partitions, one 2TB, and one 750GB or so - however job still failing.

Does anyone have any pointers at all?
Many thanks in advance

As far as I know you are correct, mbr cannot go above 2tb partitions. Use cmd, diskpart to clean the disk and create mbr partitions and see if that works. The windows GUI is too helpful and probably left some gpt stuff on there.

thank you. Have just used diskpart to convert to GPT and then back to MBR, then created simple volume. Testing backup again now

Well if the disk is usable by windows I'm out if thoughts. Backup exec isn't my thing. I'm sure a symantec expert will be around.

If you view the backup logs for that job after it fails, what specific error codes are presented?
3TB drives, while big and awesome are causing issues all over the place as they are not truely sipported.

Lets see what the error codes bring up

Hi - it does but unfortunately refers to version 2010 - we are using R2 right now..

Yup that looks like it, was there more around it (couple of lines above or below probably)

Can  you try systematically disabling the GRT options in the Backup Job, if the server is not an exchange server start with that option, same for AD and SQL and then try turning off GRT backup all-together to see if that works.

Does the backup fail at the beginning or the end of the process?

The backup works perfectly if GRT is disabled.

With GRT enabled, the backup runs for the usual length of time, as if were to be successful, then finishes with a completed with exceptions message.
