We need more then that. What have you tried?
Are you connecting through the Ethernet port or wifi?

In addition are you going through a corporate network and is there a web filter or proxy in place?

I am able to connect using both Ethernet cable and wifi my computer gets assigned an IP address. I am able to ping the router with no loss but when using safari i get a permission error. my firewall is turned off. I tried disk utility--> Repair permissions and repaired a lot of permissions I've tried Firefox and I've tried to renew my IP address.
This is not a corporate network its anywhere i go Home, Work, Library
I have another macbook pro next to me and it connects with no problem to the same network
What is the error exactly?
Almost sounds like a DNS issue. When you are connected to something, go into the system preferences and Network and see what your settings are under advanced. Do you have a DNS and a search domain?

Compare it to the other working Mac.
both macs are set to the same.
all this occured when Norton did an update and system restarted. Uninstalled Norton and still problems
Norton antivirus? Why would you need that?

What is the error that you are getting?
