Unusual WEP connection issue

When I connect wirelessly to an access point or router running WEP, both secure and unsecure, I cannot browse the web at all.  If I connect to one running WPA it browses fine, same with connecting through the ethernet port.  Laptop is a Dell Latitude D830 and I am using the Dell Utility to connect.

WEP is not a secure protocol after all. So it is advisable to use WPA. Further if you want to trouble shoot, when you are connected using the WEP were you able to ping the gateway IP of your system?

Were you able to run any DNS queries or ping the URLs?

I actually updated the Dell wireless drivers first to no avail, so I then went into the connection manager and deleted all of the old stored connections(this guy is a Field Salesman, so there were many), then rebooted.  After reboot, I was able to connect to the Internet through a WEP connection.
