I have a WD MyBook 500GB external drive.
It appears to have folders on it that total 275GB.
But, the drive reports only 25GB remaining with 450GB or so used.
I've searched the disk but can't find anything to delete in order to reach agreement....

I've learned that emptying the trash after deleting files/folders from an external hard drive is a good safety precaution. I've seen in the past when I hadn't done so, the new space didn't appear on the external drive.
My approach would be to check the disk for find & fix errors. You'll find that under the hard disks properties.
If that doesn't help, you can always transfer the folders from the external to another drive, then reformat the hard drive, then transfer them back.
I already had TreeSize and had already used it. But not using Run as Administrator. It revealed there was a Windows Backup and Restore backup scheduled that had created files taking up 270GB.
Strange, the Windows backups showed 0 bytes even though there was all that space taken up!!! Not nice.

I guess that covers the basics.
