Windows 7 Pro Networking

My client has 4 PC's on a peer to peer network and use PeachTree Accouting. The PC with the company file crashed and I installed a new PC with Windows 7 Pro. Now none of the XP machines can access the Windows 7 machine. I have shared drive C and the folders where the company file resides, set permissions to everyone with full control stll no access. The Windows 7 PC can access all of the XP PC's but none of the XP PC's can access the windows 7 PC. All PC's are on the same workgroup.
Is there some setting that I am missing.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Make sure Network Discovery is turned on as well as File Sharing:

Start-> Control Panel-> Network and Sharing Center.

Click "Change Advanced Settings" on the left.  Change the settings as you see fit.

Also check the firewall and what ports Peachtree Accounting software.
Either disable the firewall or allow Peachtree to run through the firewall.
Thanks,
Kelly W.
First of all disable the firewall, check if you can ping from the other machine. If it works with the firewall disabled then add the software in the allow list in the firewall. If it still doesn't work check also if the antivirus has a firewall and disable it.
epichero22 is in the right area however more specifically the setting that you nee to change is the network discovery setting and ensure this is set to "Turn on network discovery".

You will also need to ensure that you are in the right area.

Home or Work
Public
Domain

This is an option that you will choose when you first connect your computer to a network.
it basicly has nothing to do with ports as the program uses file sharing to access the database or what ever

not sure if this bug still persists but ive ran into a situation like this but in a workgroup environment.  windows 7 does not like windows xp.  i had a point of sale (pos) system that accesses a database over a network share.   and for some reason when i tried to access the folder via exploere it always asked for a password.  no matter what share setting i gave it.  i couldnt get the 7 machine to access the windows xp shared folders.  i enabled network discovery turned on file share.  had public folders on and off file sharing connetions with either selected. nothing worked

this same company has another site with all windows 7 and i had no issues with the shared folders

this is what i did to resolve the issue

windows 7 created a user called
windows7/shareuser
gave the user full permission
in the xp machine using explorer went to \\windows7\sharedfolder
it would promt for password.  i put it windows7/shareuser and password and checked the remember credentials.

now xp computers hace access to the windows 7 machine shared folder.  its ugly but it works
forgot to add  turn on file and printer sharing and turn on network discovery

Up until a few months ago I had a mixed WinXP/Win7 network, but never had any problems sharing between those machines utilizing a few simple steps:

- Ensure that all of the machines are in the same workgroup

- On the Win7 machine(s), ensure that you are using the "Home or Work" profile and turn on Network Discovery, File and printer sharing, Public folder sharing, and Password protected sharing.

- On the WinXP machine(s), turn off the option to "Use simple file sharing"

- Last but certainly not least, ensure that you have an identical set of userid/password combinations on all of the Windows workstations!

That should do the trick.

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your replys.
Let me explain my problem a lttle clearer.
From the XP PC's I can only get into the public folder of the Windows 7 PC but not the shared folders. I cannot open any shared folder on the Windows 7 PC. When I try to open a shared folder I get an error saying that I do not have permission. I have been into the 'Advanced Settings' and tried all that has been suggested. It is not a software issue, I put the Company File in the Public Folder of the Windows 7 PC and the XP PC's can connect from there with no propblem. I know that is not good securtiy but that is the only way it will work. I will carry another Windows 7 Pro PC there tomorrow and see if I can access the shared folders from it. I have added Windows 7 PC's to other networks with XP PC's and did not have this problem.
I will let you know how it goes.

Your suggestions are much appreciated.

That is a very unusual situation

Just to double-check, there isn't any third-party firewall or security software installed on the Windows 7 machine that could be affecting network access?

Also, on the folder that you are trying to share have you tried to mirror the exact same NTFS persmissions and share permissions that the Public folder has by default?  At one point or another, all of us have forgotten that the default share permissions are read-only, while best practices usually dictate that we set them to allow everyone full control and actually regulate access through NTFS permissions.
Not able to get to my clients workplace today. I will be there the beginning of next week and will let you know what I discover.

Thanks,

Hello Everyone,

I was able to share the documents folder by navigating through dive c and then tunneling down to users and then user documents. What I cannot access are the folders in the Libraries. They are all locked. I try to unlock them but no luck. I click on the documents folder and then click on the Share Button on the tool bar and share with everyone. After I share the documents folder and it closes out I check it and it is still locked.

Is there something I am not aware of why I cannot share the folders in the Libraries.

Thanks.
It sounds like we might be missing some little detail that is still derailing your efforts.  In a pinch, you can always try the Shared Folder Wizard to see if it can help you overcome this obstacle:

How do I share folders in Windows 7 with the Shared Folder Wizard?
Hello Run5K,

I have not been able to get back to my client on your solution yet. I have a appointment to go there this coming week and will let you know it your solution worked.

I set up another Windows 7 PC on a XP Network last week and it worked fine, they use QuickBooks and not PeachTree and I had to use the QuickBooks diagnostic tool to open the ports for QuickBooks to work.

Hello Everyone,

I never did get the Libraries to share on the Network. As I said I could tunnel down through the Users and get to documents but any files that are in the Library/Documents folder are not accessible on the network. Run5K thanks for your input on sharing folders using the wizard. I tried that and it did work for all other folders but not the Library Folders.

Thanks to all who submitted their solutions.
