Removing Active Directory Role

I'm demoting a Windows 2008 server  and was told to make sure the DNS role was removed.  When I asked another associate he said that I must remove the Active Directory role also.  These are the only two roles this server has (besides File server).

I though that "demoting" the server would automatically remove the Active Directory role.  Am I wrong?

Can some one try to help me understand a little better?
