Messages stuck in queue - 451.4.4.0 - DNS Query Failed

A couple of days ago one of our admins created a forward lookup zone in our active directory for xxx.com (that's a variable :))  now our exchange server will not send mail to that domain.  HELP!!!!!!  This one is costing us money.

You can't just delete the forward lookup zone?

If not, run:

nslookup -q=mx xxx.com 8.8.8.8

Then you need to create any of the records you see there in the xxx.com zone. The most important is the MX records and any servers that points to.

8.8.8.8 is Google's DNS server and will give you the public answer instead of the one from your own version of the zone.

nslookup -q=mx mail.ssigroup.com 8.8.8.8
Server:  google-public-dns-a.google.com
Address:  8.8.8.8

*** No mail exchange (MX) records available for mail.ssigroup.com

No, the domain name, not the mail server name (just drop mail from the query above). You need to get the MX record (defines where mail will go).

And is that a commercially sensitive name, if it must be obscured yell and I'll fix it.

ok, so do we need to create mx records or just pointer records in our ad?

You need to create the MX records, so in this case you need...

New Other Record (I think, can't check right now) / MX

Then leave the name / domain name box blank, enter 20 as the preference, then enter "server526.appriver.com." as the server name. Be sure to include that trailing "." I have there, it's important.

Repeat for the other server and preference you get in the list. You should end up with two MX records for "(same as parent folder)".

You may have to flush the cache on your mail server (ipconfig /flushdns).

And you should find that you get the same response for each of these:

nslookup -q=mx ssigroup.com
nslookup -q=mx ssigroup.com 8.8.8.8

If you don't, something was entered incorrectly in your internal DNS service.

Any chance you can screen-shot the zone and post it?

Technically against the site rules, so if you can paint out anything anything sensitive (mspaint.exe) then that would be preferred. Possible?
