Error 1923 Service not be installed when installing crystal reports 8/8.5 on Server 2008R2

Hi,

Having some issues installing Crystal Reports 8 with Upgrade to 8.5 on a new Server 2008R2 Terminal Server box.

Install runs fine until the last part where it starts trying to install services. The first error that comes up on the installer is.

Crystal Enterprise -- Error 1920. Service 'Crystal Cache Server' (CacheServer) failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

If you choose ignore on this error the following comes up.

Crystal Enterprise -- Error 1920. Service 'Crystal Report Job Server' (JobServer_Report) failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

Which you can only cancel on and it then backs out the installation.

In event Viewer the following comes up before the install errors.

Crystal Enterprise -- Error 1923. Service 'Crystal Cache Server' (CacheServer) could not be installed.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services

and

Crystal Enterprise -- Error 1923. Service 'Crystal Report Job Server' (JobServer_Report) could not be installed.  Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.

Am running as a Domain Administrator on the box, have tried rick clicking and running as administrator for the installer as well.

UAC is completely turned off and Data Execution Prevention is set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only"

Have rebooted a couple of times. And still does the same.

Also tried to run in compatiability mode of Windows XP SP2 as per the troubleshoot utility.

Not sure what else can be tried.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The services that are failing to start are not Crystal Reports Services.  They're Crystal Enterprise or BusinessObjects Enterprise Services. So, you're either trying to install Crystal or BusinessObjects Enterprise, not Crystal Reports, or your trying to install Crystal Reports on top of a server that already has a Crystal or BusinessObjects Enterprise system installed.

There are a number of issues here:

1)  Compatibility - The versions of Crystal Reports you're trying to install are ancient and are almost certainly not compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2.  They even predate XP SP2.  As such, there's no guarantee they'll work, although hopefully they will.

2)  Installation order - If you already have a Crystal or BusinessObjects installation on that machine, you may have just broken it.  If you're going to install both Crystal Reports and an Enterprise product on the same machine you have to install Crystal Reports first.  They use some of the same .dlls and the Crystal Reports .dlls will overwrite the Enterprise .dlls if you install it afterwards.

So, what is it you're really trying to install here?  Also, why are you using such an old version on a new OS (that's only listed as compatible with BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1 SP3, btw)?

Hi Kurt,

Many thanks for your reply.

The reason we are trying to install this version is we have some legacy software that links into this that we dont want to change at the moment.

It is a new server so no previous versions have been installed on it.

What we need to get installed is Crystal Reports Developer edition version 8.5 upgrade. So I believe we need to install Crystal Enterprise 8.0 with Crystal Decisions first and then add the upgrade of Crystal Reports Developer edition Version 8.5

Thanks.

I agree, CR8 is probably not fully compatible with Win Server 2008, since it was built for Win 95/98.

Also why are you installing CR on the server?
CR is the development tool.  You should only need the runtime files for CR8 or 8.5 on the server.
The Crystal help has some information on which files are needed.

Thank you very much! I just had to install Crystal reports and put the upgrade path from the old server install. I thought I needed to install Crystal Enterprise 8 and then upgrade from there.

Thanks very much for your help
