Hi haoss,
it is possible to turn off Windows Live Mail emoticons.
Click on the start (blue button in the upper left corner)
Select 'Options' and then 'Mail'
Click on the 'Compose' tab
DESELECT the 'Convert special key strokers to emoticons' checkbox.
Regards,
Nik

I have attached my windows live image. I dont see any "start" in the upper left corner. Can you elaborate?
Additionally if I go to options-compose in a different way I don't see anything pertaining to special key strokes

What version of Windows Live Mail are you using?
Can you download the latest version if you currently don't have it installed?

I have windows live mail 2009; I have seen bad reviews for 2011
Well, I don't think this is possible with that version of Windows Live.
I've actually didn't have any issues with the latest version of Windows Live Essentials 2011 except, it gets rather slow if you're using a lot of mail accounts. 8+ or something like that.
