Description:
The description for Event ID 27745 from source Windows SharePoint Services 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
#50071: Unable to connect to the database SharePoint_Config_29c26fca -17b8-48c1 -9704-b869 932abcb6 on xxxxxx\Microsoft##SSEE. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running.
I have followed most of the many reports of this issue but they mainly relate to a failed MS update that broke SharePoint and does not seem to be my issue.
I can connect to the database via SQL Server Management Studio Express using np:\\.\pipe\MSSQL$Microsof t##SSEE\sq l\query
This may be relevant. If connecting to companyweb via IE8 I just get a 404. If I try using Firefox I am prompted for a user and password and then get:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.0
Date: Thu, 09 Jun 2011 11:02:41 GMT
Connection: close
In offering suggestions please don't assume I have tried the obvious. I am completely lost when it comes to the SharePoint Services and SQL in general. As an end user this is an area you never venture into until it breaks!
Many thanks,
Brent

Have you checked the services on the server to make sure the required SP services are running?

Yes sorry possibly should have added that. Never know how much info to supply as in the past I've posted everything and then I get less interest as there is just too much to read. I was worried with this one as so many of the threads I found on the Microsoft Forums go unsolved. The ones I found on EE didn't seem to apply.
Another bit of info. I can't run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard as it errors with an unhandled exception. The first bit of the error is as follows:
Microsoft.SharePoint.SPExc eption: Unable to connect to database. Check database connection information and make sure the database server is running. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServ ices.COMEx ception (0x81020024): Unable to connect to database. I don't know of any other way to test the connection than through Server Management Studio Express.
I also tried looking in the logs in each of the five C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.n\MSSQL\LOG folders but could see nothing there that rang alarm bells.
The only change that has been made by me on the server is an upgrade of McAfee VirusScan 8.8 but I have looked at those logs and can't see anything untoward.

Just ran psconfig -cmd upgrade -inplace b2b again in the hope it would work a second time.

try disableing mcaffee and check for its logs for anything of interest it might have had a hit on part of IIS and quarantined or deleted an important file.
some info I'd be interested: The base operating system (server 200?), iis version, sql version.
from the management studio can you browse the sharepoint database?
you might want to look at the logs in files "C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicrosoftShared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS\"

Many thanks for getting back to me. In answer to your questions:
I've already attempted to disable McAfee and the logs are clear. Also nothing in the Quarantine folder.
I'm running Small Business Server 2008 Premium with the default install of IIS etc. I haven't installed SQL Server and but am using SQL Server Express 2005.
Yes I can connect to the databases using Management Studio and expand Tables etc.
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\MicrosoftShared\Web Server Extensions\12\LOGS\" contain the following:

Is the issue raised in my first post relevant? Why do I get asked for a Username and Password when connecting to a Sharepoint site via Firefox?

Microsoft fixed the issue after I opened a support ticket.
Thanks for posting that.
