Exchange store in repair and Outlook clients

My exchange 2003 server took a power hit a few days ago and had to be restored from image backup.  All seemed OK till around the end o the day when exchange came down.  Store would not mount, and hours later it was found that two of the log files are corrupt.  Had an NTbackup of exchange from that morning and hoped to be able to restore/replay, but that was not to be either since the corrupt log is in the backup too.  (I guess there is no error check in backup)  End of the day, an empty store is up so users can send/receive new mail, and hard repair of 100gb store is underway. So while this is going on, some users had Outlook set in cached mode, so they still see all their mail, but Outlook says offline, so no new mail in or out.  Should I tell Outlook to go online, which one wins?  Does Outlook say 'look at all this mail I can give back to exchange' or does exchange say 'YOU are an empty mailbox! Empty yourself!"
