iexplore.exe processes left behind

Hi there,

I am running windows 7 with IE8 and have noticed almost every day I have manu iexplore.exe processes sitting in task manager. So I did some digging and found:
1. Open Internet Explorer - 2 iexplore.exe processes are in task manager - one for IE and one for the tab
2. Open a second instance of Internet explorer - that is a new iexplore.exe - there will now be 3 iexplore.exe in task manager
3. Close the second instance of Internet Explorer and in task manager the 3rd instance of iexplore.exe created in step 2 still remains.

This is creating havoc with memory and IE apps as many are opened and closed each day, however when closing the iexplore.exe is not shutting down in Task Manager.  Why are they not shutting down ?

Download procexp from microsoft (will be the first thing on a google search for it) this will show you what processes are running and if they have any parent processes. I know that some AV for example uses IE for their user interface.

This is me just starting iexplore manually and trying to shut it down, the second instance of IE I start does not shut down in task manager even though I clicked on the X within Internet Explorerr to shut it down.  Are you saying that something else is keeping it open ?
Oh, sorry. Misread your post slightly. I'd definitely give procexp a go as it shows much more info on processes than task manager does and may reveal something obvious.

Have you tried either upgrading IE to IE9? Alternatively I found the other day that a JavaScript error I was seeing in IE8 was fixed when I installed Win 7 service pack 1 - might be worth a try.
