Windows Update Issue

1. Windows update returns an error message advising that it must be run with administrator rights. The problem is that it IS being run with an administrator account. (Have tried several.)

2. This computer was running surveillance camera software and is being redeployed as a normal desktop.

3. I suspect the vendor changed something so that only a specific user, or perhaps no one, could run windows update to avoid having the system shut down.

4. Any ideas as to where they could have locked out access to windows update?

I would try making another user account with admin rights the log into that user account and see if you can update your system with the new user account.

But first I would check with the surveillance camera software vendor to make sure they did not block the updates because some older versions of software in the XP days would not run or install  with specific newer windows updates. I remember a few programs crashing until the programmers fixed there software when Windows XP SP2 update was released.

Also update blocking could be a sign the windows on your system is not legit and blocking updates to prevent windows license check which would un register that copy of windows.

It could be many thinks even a trojan or virus on your system can stop updates.

1.) I would recommend making another user then try updating.

2.) If one does not work contact the surveillance camera software vendor and see if they blocked the windows update.

3.) If one or two does not work scan your system completely with a good virus scanner.
Try downloading and scanning your system with this free software Search & Destroy Bot
This program also has advanced features you can turn on that has tools and options for windows
that might turn your updates back on after you update it and do a complete ad ware scan. I use
program on all my systems works great and even keeps my kids systems at home clean.

4.) What I would do if nothing else works is back up my important data and reinstall the system or have a tech check the system out.

Maybe someone on this site can tell you how to turn on the windows update service again.

Best of luck.
