z-index not working in IE

I have a menu to the left of my page that slides out to the right, and in the center of the page is an image slider. The menu is working properly in Chrome and FF, but in IE theexpanding menu is going under the image slider. I tried setting the z-index of the menu items higher, but it didn't seem to do anything. Does anyone know what the problem is here?

Thanks
