And of course, you can use the plain old "Print Screen" key on the keyboard to get a full screen shot or the "ALT+Print SCreen" to get the active window.

Yet another freebie - IrfanView has a screen grabber built in with a nice option to retain or remove the mouse pointer from the image (it also captures drop down menus that would otherwise disappear when you hit a key)
Here is another one, which isn't free, but it's pretty smart and it's cheaper than others. You can set keyboard shortcuts, capture the entire screen, parts of it, a scrolling screen, sample colors, measure the screen etc. It also has the option of editing the resulting image in an image editing software of your choice or save in a variety of formats. It's what I use.

To add onto what leew said, the Print Scrn button puts the image into your clipboard (it appears to do nothing), so you can paste it into another program, such as Word.
Easy way out.
