I have purchased a new Dell dimension c521 small form factor. http://compreviews.about.com/od/sff/gr/DellDimenC521.htm i am trying to upgrade my RAM, i recently purchased some bad RAM on eBay which leads me to believe i am not shopping correctly. What do i search for? how do i know if my RAM is compatible.

Ditto what leew said.
But for future reference, searching for something like the following will get you better results. And don't forget to check the results for voltage and timings, especially if you are going to add to ram already installed

"PC2-4200 Cx" ("DDR2-533 Cx") where x is the CAS number
in case there is some ram installed that works, you can look for that model
to expand a bit on Leew's suggestion, the Crucial scanning tool not only looks at what model of PC you have, but also interrogates your system to see what slots are free, and then makes sure its recommendations are compatible for you.

There's no point ordering the right technical spec if it's not a good match to what you currently have, or if all your slots are full already.
got the RAM today. worked well. Thanks! used http://www.crucial.com/
